The CSP Tracing Utility on Windows Vista

Windows Vista uses a protected mode to prevent random programs from making changes to operating system settings such as the CSP registry entries.  This stops the CSP Trace Utility from enabling and disabling tracing on the CSPs.

Vista also has an application compatibility mode which can cause the Tracing CSP's logs to end up in different places depending on the Vista compatibility of the application that invokes it.

The best work-around at this time is to disable these protections while tracing the activity of a CSP.  Disabling the Vista User Account Control is the simplest way to do that.  Here's how:

  • Open the Control Panel.
  • Select 'Classic View' on the left.
  • Open the 'User Accounts' control.
  • Select 'Turn User Account Control on or off'.
  • Clear the 'Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer' checkbox.
  • Click the 'OK' button.
  • You will be prompted to restart your computer.

Note that The Soft Pedal Shop recommends that UAC be enabled for production systems, and only suggests turning off UAC during CSP tracing.
